As a Trims and Apparel Designer II for Columbia Sportswear, you will design industry leading trims and branding concepts for all global brand assortments. A passion for design combined with strong organizational and detail skills, presentation skills, calendar awareness and a collaborative mindset will allow you hands-on involvement in trim and branding developments which support seasonal initiatives, special projects and go to market strategies. In this role, you will have the opportunity to engage with cross functional partners in apparel, surface design, materials research, merchandising, and manufacturing, and gain experience, skills and increased knowledge of Columbia design ethos, culture, products, and process.


  • Research global trim and apparel market trends and interpret target consumer needs for the outdoor marketplace. Participates in pre-season design discussion of seasonal trend application and cross functional collaboration. Have a clear understanding of our target consumer.

  • Generate multiple, unique trims concepts per category that address key initiatives, critical functional, aesthetic, and business goals on a seasonal basis.

  • Work with cross category design teams to provide design and concept boards to communicate seasonal concepts. Participate in person or digital presentations to articulate seasonal concepts.

  • Design and build schematics for trims and branding elements, and closely partner with the material research team throughout the trims development process to support high quality execution.

  • Produce and maintain the global product brand manuals and drive brand consistency across product categories and regions through continuous knowledge sharing and communication of current trims and brand manuals.

  • Collaborate with creative leaders, apparel design, merchandising, production, materials research to procure critical design information related to the development requirements of the artwork.

  • Create a seasonal corporate trims palette per category in partnership with apparel design. Palettes must be created within the timeline and budgetary constraints.

  • Develop and maintain open lines of communication with partners in design, merchandising, materials research, production, and product development. Active participant in team meetings, staff meetings, etc. as needed to ensure strong communication on all design, process and product related issues.

  • Support process discipline and manage time expertly for trims projects to ensure effective and efficient transfer of information at key gates and dates

  • Embrace a fast-paced environment. Action on unforeseen changes quickly, ensuring quality and accuracy.

  • Support department training as directed

  • Performs other duties as assigned


  • Successfully able to support our Global Apparel assortments by creating seasonal trim schematics, brand visual documents, and concept presentations.

  • Able to solve a variety of problems that may be difficult and varied in nature. Consults with team members on more complex issues. Work performed will have impact to the global product assortment.

  • Successfully able to work closely with internal partners like the Apparel and Footwear departments, product development, materials research, and marketing teams as well as external partners like industry product representatives, sales representatives and customers.

  • An excellent communicator with skills to establish positive working relationships across various levels and fields of expertise.


  • Bachelor’s degree, applicable certification or equivalent experience specializing in trim, branding, graphic design or related field.

  • Two to four years’ experience in trim, branding, graphic design and/or apparel industry.

  • Experience in the outdoor industry preferred

  • Strong knowledge of trims and branding design concepts, development, production, and execution.

  • Design skills expressed through hand sketches and Adobe software. Solid knowledge of trim and branding digital design.

  • High proficiency with MAC environment and the Adobe Suite, especially Illustrator, and Photoshop. Proficient in Microsoft Office products.  PDM knowledge a plus.

  • Strong color aptitude.

  • Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills as this role may interface with several cross-functional teams. Assists in the coordination of information to ensure ongoing collaboration and program execution.  Support and leads in process optimization and seeks out efficiencies.

  • Understands key business partner functions, including design and development processes, merchandising procedures, materials, and production techniques and has high-level knowledge of the product creation process.

  • Ability to self-manage and operate independently and with discretion. Ability to work effectively under pressure.
