General Position Summary:


When our founders established the Bay as our base back in 1993, Mountain Hardwear was destined for a life of play. They wanted to make equipment and apparel that climbers and mountaineers could depend on-but they wanted to have fun doing it, too. We bring the same stoke we have in the mountains to the drawing board. We express our brand through climbing, but more importantly, through the culture that we as climbers, riders, artists, innovators, movers, shakers-(insert your thing here) create.

  • Researches worldwide marketplace and interprets consumer and market needs as they relate to product category - Outerwear and SME.
  • Includes researching fabric, color, and design concepts. May attend selected trade shows for market research to gain thorough understanding of consumer/product requirements. Travels for consumer/product research as approved by Design Director.
  • Proposes design ideas based on seasonal assignments with regard to fabrication, style definition, functional features, fit requirements and design details. Refines concepts as directed by the Design Director. Works within target prices as much as possible and coordinates efforts with Production/Sourcing to assure most effective results.
  • Provides sketches and line art to communicate design concepts, including multiple views and detail sketches as necessary. Provides design/concept boards to communicate design and color direction.
  • May be assigned to develop and lead the creative vision for a specified product category.

  • Possess thorough knowledge of apparel design and development; merchandising procedures, product materials, and production techniques.Able to drive a culture of empowerment and trust through the application of servant leadership principles.
  • Ability to work in a demanding, fast paced environment with a high level of adaptability

  • Requires a Bachelor's degree or equivalent specializing in apparel design, fabric arts, or related field. Associate's degree with 2-3 years related work experience acceptable in lieu of bachelor's degree.Working knowledge in the global trade of garment and material options.
  • Minimum three years garment design/development experience in the apparel industry. Experience with technicaloutdoor industry and apparel category preferred.
  • Mental ability to conduct complex interpersonal interactions with employees and customers, troubleshoot, design, coordinate and perform special task/projects simultaneously, make decisions, operate independently and with discretion, and work effectively under pressure.
  • Must have excellent eyesight, including strong sense of color.
