Responsibilities

The Associate Buyer is responsible for the purchasing and managing of specific departments within the Buyer's area of responsibility. They are responsible for helping to exceed department sales goals and profitability by working with internal and external partners, to help create impactful assortments, coordinate deliveries, and analyze weekly selling. They will partner with other internal departments such as planning, social media, marketing, store operations, product development and visual merchandising to execute overall strategies. The Associate Buyer will also contribute to finding new items, categories and ideas through trend research and competitive shopping. In addition to their roles and responsibilities, the Associate Buyer will also help guide and train Assistant Buyers and Senior Assistant Buyers.

  • Responsible for building, creating & managing merchandise assortments that align with market and consumer trends, to be presented to the Buyer. Assortment creation includes selecting and developing merchandise by considering quality, sourcing, timing, delivery, mix, and price.
  • Analyze weekly sales and item performance to find opportunities and strategies to drive sales and margin.
  • Prepare merchandise and reports for weekly team meetings.
  • Manage entire product lifecycle from creation, tracking of the purchase orders, samples, merchandising in store, to markdowns and discards.
  • Responsible for making purchasing decisions independently that satisfy the customer demand and achieve sales, turn and margin plan.
  • Travel to store locations to review product mix, gather feedback, and share information with the merchant team.
  • Market travel: visiting vendors, attending trade shows, etc.
  • Maintain and grow professional relationships with external suppliers and internal partners via telephone, email, and face-to-face meetings.
  • Partner with leadership and planning counterparts to manage the OTB and to identify opportunities in style count, sales goals, and inventory flow.
  • Manage markdowns and promotion strategies.
  • Ability to create and pull reports to better analyze business, make decisions, and drive sales and margin.
  • Full understanding of all cross functional businesses.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; and/up to 2-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in all Senior Assistant Buyer duties.
  • Strong strategic and analytical skills to grow a business.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong ability to be a self-starter and able to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong collaboration skills to partner with cross-functional teams.
  • Able to develop, plan, present and execute strategies.
  • Ability to think creatively, strategically, and technically.
