SUMMARY

The buyer works with Divisional Merchandise Manager in developing merchandise strategies & assortments for a specific category of business. The buyer's focus is on inspiring customer creativity and bringing new products to the sales floor & Joann.com. The buyer should become recognized as a customer expert that strives to improve the shopping experience and increase Joann's market share. The buyer is responsible for developing direct reports and accountable for financial metrics that include sales, gross margin, net margin, return on investment and inventory turnover. This position leads cross-functional teams through the implementation of a merchandising strategy which includes creating assortments, developing merchandise presentations, executing advertising plans, managing product mix, and control of promotional expenditures and markdowns. The buyer builds and maintains strong effective partnerships with internal cross-functional teammates as well as external vendor and factory alliances. The buyer will directly supervise a focused team that will likely include a salaried & hourly team member. Business volume range as follows- Annual sales $55-$275 million Annual gross margin $20-$140 million Annual cost purchases $10-$85 million Assort and manage 40-400 different layout modules that deliver the highest productivity in any market in addition to feature space endcaps, drive aisle, queue line, and other premium outposts.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

  • Builds and assorts an array of products and/or services by store that achieves financial targets. Partners with cross functional team members in assuring assortments are correct, financial plans and or open to buy dollars are appropriate, presentation standards are correct, and store allocations are appropriate. Develops and executes promotional strategies that drive top and bottom line. Understands eCommerce and drives for results in both stores and online. Continuously works to set Jo-Ann apart from the competition in product, results, and experience. Analyzes data and other information to be reactive and proactive in setting a course to achieve metrics. 35%

  • Sets vision and direction, within shops or categories, in creating impactful and exciting merchandising in-store and online. Improves navigation in-store through logical groupings of product and signage, drives in partnership with site merchandising team online taxonomy, feature pages, and brand shops. 20%

  • Creates basic, seasonally, and promotional assortments. Understands key items and how to drive them. Demonstrates creativity and understands trends and fashion. Strategically positions specific products within our stores and eCommerce that support the Jo-Ann brand based on expert knowledge of the customer and the competition. Increases the perceived value of products through better quality, strong price points, and promotional messaging. Create a sense of urgency within the customer. Takes risks and utilizes the entirety of the Jo-Ann store portfolio in testing and proving out newness with a focus to drive it into the chain. Actively engages and supports product development and sourcing of quality products that bring value to our customers and profits to the company. 15%

  • Takes accountability for the growth and development of their team members. Sets clear expectations and holds people accountable. Coaches and develops team members to help build skill and enhance performance, leading to succession planning and development. Supports peer groups in developing others. Recognizes others and councils in private. Takes action, in partnership with DMM and/or HR, on under-performing team members. 15%

  • Actively negotiates the best price, quality, and value for our customers. Seeks to understand other’s position and points of view and works to increase the benefits for all. Negotiates for the long term. Does so in accordance with the Jo-Ann values. Frequently travels and works on weekends when necessary to deliver on our customer’s expectations. Manages vendor, agent, and factory relationships to drive business, improve sales and productivity. Negotiates with vendors on pricing, marketing allowances, co-op monies, new store discounts, exclusive products, new events, contracts, return allowances, to name a few. 10%

  • Works to improve existing process for self and others looking for inefficiencies. Pushes to streamline processes and simplify tasks and or functions. Actively learns new systems and or processes that can benefit self and others. 5%

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position requires up to 30% travel and may require working occasional weekends (e.g. Trade shows, domestic and international travel, etc.) to meet desired objectives.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Education Minimum: 4 Year / Bachelors Degree, Qualified candidates must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Business, or a related field.

Experience Minimum: 6+ years experience in merchandising, assorting, and promotional planning. Experience in developing and executing a business plan/business turnaround plan from a merchandising and financial perspective. Must have demonstrated the ability to lead cross-functional teams

Experience Preferred: Two plus years of experience in inventory management. Candidate should have experience in multiple disciplines to include merchandise or space planning, replenishment, and/or product development. Two plus years in a supervisory role.
