Job description

The Planning Manager is responsible for establishing demand forecasts using various projections, market feedback and historical data. Manages the division's financials by developing and gaining agreement on budgets, goals and plans, and ensuring that the financial strategy pursued is consistent with the brand growth plan. Hires, coaches and develops a quality team including succession planning and regular performance reviews to address personal growth and development needed to foster a productive, focused team. Fosters teamwork by building effective teams committed to organizational goals. Reports to Planning Director. Manages Planners. Must possess the ability to:

- Highlight the business opportunities and risks associated with the current financial position and actual performance of the business

- Present analysis in weekly merchant meetings, monthly Merchandise Planning Committee meetings or Quarterly Buy meetings

- Lead and manage the Merchandise Planning team in the development, analysis and revision of sales, inventory, markdowns and profit

- Call out issues at key business meetings

- Ensure that the financial strategy pursued is consistent with the budget and profit parameters

- Maintain risk assessment models that are used to determine buy levels and maintain profitability to budgets

- Participate in creating the analysis and financial information for the Profit Planning Meeting which includes sales, inventory, markdowns and supporting schedules to align to business strategies

- Manage new business testing and development in partnership with the merchandiser

- Provide the leadership and the necessary formal and informal training, including one-on-one development, needed to produce a team that contributes consistent financial growth to the business

- Work with other areas of the business as needed, to ensure proper support and coordination of Merchandise issues including Procurement, Allocation, Merchandising and Finance

- Recommend action and communicate issues that relate to Merchandising and may hinder our ability to achieve our financial objectives


- 7+ years of retail merchandise or demand planning experience

- Previous experience managing direct reports

- Excellent analytical and communication skills

- Ability to recognize need for urgency and accuracy

- Ability to work well within a team environment

- Demonstrated leadership and decision-making skills

- Excellent communication, prioritizing and problem-solving skills

- Superior time management skills

- Expert technical skill proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel and Access

- Advanced technical skill proficiency using Arthur Planning and Allocation tool preferred

- Bachelor's degree in Finance or Supply Chain preferred

- Advanced degree, MBA preferred
