Role Overview

The Menswear Designer is responsible for executing their Role Responsibilities to deliver the Design Department’s Goals and Key Objectives, which are as follows.

  • Gain a good working knowledge of the brands we work with, their market position, selling history, brand aesthetic and placement strategy, price point strategy, competitive landscape, and white space opportunities.
  • Design, in collaboration with our customers, a range of men’s products across; sport shirts, bottoms, knits.
  • Design product which achieves the BU (Business Unit) volume, customer cost targets and BU profit goals.
  • Consistently propose new ideas for product that will drive volume, create program opportunities by enhancing our customer’s core and/or fashion assortment.
  • Conceive design concepts under direction and independently.
  • Have complete knowledge and experience in; fabric, performance features, finish, fit.
  • Have current awareness of competitive intelligence in the market place.
  • Develop relationships with cross functional partners, factory, mill and other key vendor partners that advance our capabilities.
  • Adhere to calendar expectations.
  • Develop relationship with key customer contacts
  • Be able to create and articulate a design presentation, articulating key trends and product concepts
  • Do all of the above in order to establishes our organization as “The Experts in all that we do.”


  • Ongoing and constant analysis of future trends and current trends including having a supply of ‘stockpiled’ fabrics, patterns, style images, color inspiration, trims and marketing pieces.
  • Always looking to learn ‘who’s hot?’ and why?’, plus identify how BU can benefit from this information within current business, or how this knowledge can create new business.
  • Ability to formulate design ideas that will drive volume. This may be for existing Core or Core Plus styles, or for new program concepts that can create a new Core or Core Plus program
  • Ability to formulate design ideas that focus on the appropriate fashion trends that will connect with a specific Brand and its customer base
  • Participate in ideation and creation of seasonal trend and other media presentations through the use of illustrator, photo shop, or power point
  • Take direction from the VP and Director and expand on the direction/inspiration. It is important that the designer have a voice and vision of their own.
  • Take trend and market research and work innovative designs into brand appropriate styles

·       Understands target customer and product vision

  • Analyze past best sellers and identify what made it successful
  • Analyze worst sellers and identify what made it underperform
  • Able to use this intelligence to maximize successful formulas, minimize misfires, and know how to apply it to designs that will deliver volume product and meaningful programs to our customers
  • Prepare Design portion of costing sheets for submission to PD

·       Understand various fabric types, yarn qualities, fabric and garment finishes and their applicable value

·       Collaborate with Sales to analyse and engineer how designs can achieve target costs

  • Review sku plans to formulate needed design work for upcoming season.
  • Collaborate on the creation of viable brand appropriate designs with the Textile-CAD Designer
  • Design new models; collar and cuff shapes, contrast details, packaging, etc.
  • Develop new trims and buttons
  • Utilizes illustrator/photo shop to create art work that will enhance design presentations
  • Guide the intern on the design and vision of presentation boards
  • Present design product to VP, Director, Sales, and Senior Executives
  • Coordinate and prepare new development hand off with overseas SMM/CS teams
  • Review development submits (as necessary) H-looms, Lab Dips, A/W submits, etc.
  • Monitor Time and Action calendars to ensure on-time deliveries

·       Responds to daily e-mail and phone communication within 24-48 hours and communicates with a succinct and efficient style that focuses on advancing design and development to a more complete stage.

Education, Knowledge and Skills

·       Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a fast-paced setting.

·       Ability to communicate and interact in a professional and effective manner with all team members.

·       Ability to learn new skills, and adapt to change as our customer’s needs or our business model changes

·       Team player with the ability to partner with others to effect solutions.

·       Strong organizational and time management skills and attention to detail.

·       Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

·       Bachelor’s Degree or 5-7 years product development experience in apparel or textiles-related field
