Rainbow Shops is currently seeking a Merchandise Planner to join our Corporate Office Team located in Brooklyn, New York. The Merchandise Planner will be responsible for building financial sales plans, gross margin, and inventory plans for multiple departments, as well as manage and plan merchandise inventory levels and strategies to drive departmental sales, inventory, profit and turnover objectives. The Planner will provide in season financial projections along with strategies and identifying risks and opportunities to maximize profits. Drive and/or contribute to projects resulting in improved departmental systems and efficiencies. Ensure that the development and management of assortment, demand, and inventory plans achieve company goals. Track, report on and analyze promotional activities. The Merchandise Planner will provide historical data to help drive future decisions. Report business highlights to Buyer and VP Planning and Distribution.


Merchandise planning, inventory and placement for specific product lines

Building financial sales, gross margin and inventory plans at a monthly level on a seasonal basis

Prepares seasonal, advertised and peak period buying plans

Monitors line performance and updates line plans based upon analysis of markdowns, promotions and seasonal changes

Reforecast business in-season based on current performance, present revised projections and recommendations to cross functional partners and senior leadership

Partner with cross-functional teams to communicate division level financial merchandising plans and merchandise strategies to support the financial objectives

Impact sales and maximizes inventory management by advising the buying team on profitable line inventory management and planning affordable assortments; analyze sales, margin and inventory performance and suggest modifications to merchandise plans regarding reorder and disposition of old and seasonal merchandise. Identify and communicate potential inventory liabilities and drive appropriate actions to resolve

Develop and review historical order data and current product performance to identify redundancies in product assortment, identify product category trends and assess basic product risks

Responsible for managing and setting direction for merchandise flow and quantity needs planning and for advising the buyers on the effect of promotions on maintained gross margin

Analyze and reflect current trends on actual sales performance; revise in-season plans for sales and profitability; control inventory levels; work with Buyers to develop promotional strategies to maximize profitability; analyze promotional effectiveness and make future recommendations

Create and monitor open to buy by season. Report on open to buy departmental performance as needed

Develop, consolidate, and communicate a comprehensive pre-season planning strategy that identifies opportunities and risks in all areas of responsibility

Partner with Distributor to analyze weekly and daily inventory issues. Develop creative solutions to protect business

Oversee the Allocation and Buying support team for assigned departments

Ad hoc reporting and business analysis as needed


Bachelor’s Degree in related field

5 to 7 years of retail planning or merchandising experience in a specialty or direct selling environment

Ability to manage multiple priorities

Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism

Good interpersonal, written and verbal communications

Success establishing effective working relationships with business partners

Expertise with MS Office and Lotus Notes

Experience with Island Pacific and Eye merchandising system is preferred but not necessary

Resolution oriented, analytical along with advanced retail math skills

Proven track record in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment
