The Merchandiser is responsible for identifying, developing and executing product strategies and initiatives that delight the Lilly Pulitzer® consumer and lead to profitable growth in the business.

This is within the context of the current company strategies, brand positioning, and overall product strategy. This is consistent with the company Creed, Core Values, and Core Leadership Qualities.Performance in this position is measured by achieving total company Net Sales targets, performance of specified categories to prior year, along with contributing to the Department Goals.

The Merchandiser is responsible for four (4) primary goals. Achieving these is their role in executing the company strategy, brand positioning and product strategy.

Achieve the total company Net Sales goals, performance within specified categories, and contributing to the Department’s Goals. Execute all merchandising activities related to seasonal product development. Identify and bring to market strong new product ideas through command of your business and strategic thinking. Collaborate effectively with colleagues and operate in accordance with company principles.

1) Achieve the total company financial goals, outperform prior year within specified product categories, along with Department Goals as they relate to the Company road map.

  • The Merchandiser has significant impact on the execution and evaluation of their product classes and will make decisions that impact the Net Sales for those categories.
  • To reinforce the Company First headset, the Merchandiser will also be responsible for contributing to Department Goals, which are in place to achieve both total company financial targets, and contribute to the health and success of the comprehensive Lilly Pulitzer business.

2) Develop and Execute All Merchandising Activities Related to Developing Seasonal Product Lines and X00Seasonal and X00 Needs

  • Prepare the Merchandise Assortment Plans/pyramids for each season.
  • Build and manage the AIS and MSB assortment.
  • Identify the ranking at the Style and SCP level with the goal of exceeding total company Net Sales and Gross Profit targets; this includes collaborating with Planners prior to a seasonal kick off, and throughout the development.
  • Managing systems for all stages of development, including Initial Fit, SMS and Final Price Approval.
  • Facilitate and use First Insight to “crowd source” for consumer insights and apply learning.
  • Preparing as necessary for Business Meetings and on-sale.

Manage Competitive Analysis.

  • Understand the market for competitive products and anticipate new competitive threats within product categories. This includes maintaining an up-to-date competitive landscape by sub-category.
  • Identify gaps in the market that indicate opportunities for Lilly Pulitzer.
  • Conduct appropriate market research to learn the consumer and competition. This can be visits to company-operated Lilly Pulitzer stores or other points of distribution, Resort locations, e-commerce sites, etc.

Establish Retail and Wholesale pricing for specified product categories to achieve company Net Sales and Gross Profit targets.

  • Set the Retail and Wholesale pricing for each of the categories products to achieve company Net Sales and Gross Profit targets; ensure our price/value mix can achieve the full-price sell through targets.
  • Understand landed costs of each product and understand what drives product cost.
  • Understand competitive pricing for the categories in which Lilly Pulitzer® competes and the size of the businesses we are up against.
  • Understand the relationships between bookings, volume, sell through, initial mark up, maintain margin.

Conduct in-season and post-season selling analysis and provide audience-appropriate key learnings and recommendations.

  • Synthesize findings with clear recommendations that can impact future seasons. Understand the audience to know what type of information is most helpful to them.
  • Build new reports to further analyze the business and find new ways to evaluate the assortment.
  • Use the store associates and E-commerce reviews as a qualitative resource to understand the “whys” of product performance.
  • Send weekly selling updates to the product teams.
  • Lead bi-weekly selling recaps with the product teams.
  • Prepare seasonal analysis and recommendations as part of IBSR.

Manage Seasonless Chase

  • Lead the team’s process for Seasonless Chase to analyze and react to business trends and smart profitable opportunity. Deploy the functions of execution across the team.
  • Leverage Chase and Fast Track opportunities to increase Net Sales.
  • Bring forward profitable chase ideas.
  • Be mindful of how Chase needs to be used within your categories to achieve financial plans.
  • Work with Chase Team to execute and communicate Chase styles.

Collaborate with Director of Creative Content Planning & Development on seasonal product stories

  • Work with merchants to aggregate key stories by delivery at each product stage
  • Schedule and assist in leading meetings with merch and planning to align product marketing plans with base buys, etc.

3) Identify and bring to market strong new product ideas that grow the specified categories of business. This is achieved through strategic planning, critical thinking and command of product categories.

  • The Merchandiser should demonstrate strong command for the market specific to their categories within the Resort Chic space. They can demonstrate command of the business by educating and informing senior members within Merchandising along with Planning, Allocation and counterparts in design and PD.
  • Lead specified categories by establishing yourself as the primary Merchandising counterpart with the Product Team. This can be done through leading meetings, being solution oriented, demonstrating curiosity.
  • Proactively make recommendations on how to simplify or improve processes.
  • Manage or lead special assignments, like First Insight, Edited, Looker, Centric, etc, to become the point person or expert who can lead the department.
  • Help to develop and execute forward-thinking merchandising strategies for annual and seasonal plans.
  • Work closely with Design and Product Development to identify ideas we can feasibly achieve with our capabilities and competitive advantages.

4) Collaborate effectively with colleagues, operate in accordance with The Company Creed and Core Values, and Core Leadership qualities.

  • Establish cross pollination and collaboration within the team and among the design, merchandising, product development and technical design teams, leading by example.
  • Planning and Allocation are key counterparts for Merchandisers to collaborate with in achieving objectives.
  • Continue to build relationships with Product Development counterparts in order to further credibility.
  • Collaborate with Creative Content to communicate products, and product strategies to be high-lighted in the customer journey.
  • Work with the CRM team to understand the consumer and product trends by consumer.

SKILLS REQUIRED TO PERFORM SUCCESSFULLY:

  • Sufficient fashion sense, market knowledge and consumer understanding to uphold the vision and strategy of the brand.
  • The ability to interact effectively with the senior leaders along with several other departments, including Fashion Design, Product Development, Omni Channel Planning and Allocation, Retail Stores, E-Commerce, Communications, and Sales as required. Credibility is critical to the success of the position.
  • Strong analytical skills and the discipline to summarize conclusions and draw recommendations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are necessary.
  • Comfort in working in or observing an environment where the Lilly Pulitzer consumer shops for merchandise and developing insights.
  • The sense of urgency necessary in the apparel industry.
  • Skills and proficiency with Microsoft Windows, Excel and Word, proficiency with the company’s Product Development Management software, Centric, along with the ability to learn and use third party software like First Insight.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • A four-year college degree is required. A degree in fashion merchandising or a related subject is preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in wholesale apparel or retail required, preferably in a merchandising or retail sales capacity for a women’s fashion branded apparel company.

MISCELLANEOUS:

  • This position is classified as full-time salaried; it is exempt and is not eligible for overtime. This position is eligible for standard company fringe benefits.
  • The position requires domestic travel to visit retail stores and wholesale accounts in order to conduct product, consumer and competitive research.
  • Given the seasonality of the business, this position requires flexibility and additional working hours during peak periods.
  • This position is reviewed annually.
