ABOUT THE POSITION

Columbia Sportswear is looking for an Apparel Designer to support our PFG category. This person will work closely with the Design Director and Merchandisers, initiate and interpret new product concepts to meet the needs of our consumers, present design concepts including fabrication, style definition, color and features for review by the product creation team, and manage design projects and work with team members to ensure that deadlines are met to reach Company goals.

HOW YOU’LL MAKE A DIFFERENCE

  • Research worldwide marketplace and interprets consumer and market needs as they relate to product category(s). Includes researching fabric, color, and design concepts.

  • Propose design ideas based on seasonal assignments with regard to fabrication, style definition, functional features, fit requirements and design details.

  • Provide sketches and line art to communicate design concepts, including multiple views and detail sketches as necessary.

  • Participate in prototype process for assigned category(s) including initiating sample requests, reviewing samples and directing revisions as needed throughout the development cycle, and attending fit sessions and categorical team meetings.

  • Propose color palette for assigned category(s) and participates in color process, including defining lab dip needs and color-way development on a style-by-style basis.

  • Facilitate inter/intra-departmental communication and teamwork as needed to assure timelines are met and to ensure critical merchandising information is available to Design, Merchandising, Product Development, Graphics, Production/Sourcing, and Sales personnel.

YOU ARE

  • Able to solve complex problems and develop independent, creative solutions based on the evolution of multiple options

  • Skilled in explaining complex design problems and can guide the coordination of information to ensure ongoing collaboration and program execution

  • Able to work effectively under pressure and maintain discretion and confidentiality

  • Excellent in time-management and prioritization while working on multiple projects simultaneously

YOU HAVE

  • Bachelor’s degree, applicable certification or equivalent experience

  • 3+ years garment design experience in the apparel industry

  • Experience with outdoor industry is a plus

  • In-depth knowledge of apparel design and production principles, concepts and theories

  • Knowledge of computer design software as well as the ability to perform free hand drawings

  • Knowledge of Adobe Illustrator

  • Strong business acumen and understand how the design function integrates within the larger company along with high-level knowledge of the product creation process
