PRODUCTION MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION
Okapi is an African luxury lifestyle brand which uses sustainably sourced materials to create signature pieces of exceptional quality. Okapi endeavours to give further purpose and use to the free range farming industry in South Africa by creating functional, leather and horn masterpieces from disregarded and forgotten materials. Continuously supporting the local community and economy, Okapi products are handcrafted with exceptional quality. The Okapi collection comprises bags, purses, wallets, keyrings, backgammon boards, key rings, cardholders, scarves, jewellery and homeware.
A Cape Town based luxury brand, Okapi is now hiring a Production Manager, who will lead production of all Okapi products, taking the Creative Director’s initial concept through refinement to full production.
Understanding Brand Vision and Values and how they translate into a design language.
Understanding and representing user needs.
Defining a vision for a product.
Aligning stakeholders around the vision for the product.
Sourcing new suppliers when necessary.
Industry research - Desktop and in the field.
Co-ordinating the research and development of new designs, raw materials and product components.
Providing information to the Creative Director throughout the R&D phase to facilitate preliminary costing and feasibility assessment of new products.
Management of existing supplier relationships and co-ordination of suppliers to effectively execute production of products.
Determination of production lead times and deadlines.
Establishing quality standards against which suppliers can be held accountable.
Meticulous quality control of all elements of produced items.
Stock control and stock management of both raw materials and finished goods.
Periodic analysis of Okapi inventory levels and make recommendations on actions to take.
Extensive project management of hardware production.
Transporting products and raw materials between suppliers where required.
Management of production assistants when necessary.
Identifying production inefficiencies and implementing improvements.
Establishing structures and systems to facilitate production and control over-stock.
Contribute to Catalogues developed for new launches.
Confidence in various international shipping methods, plan ahead to ensure the fastest and most cost-effective shipping methods.
Calculating raw material requirements and management of raw material stock levels.
Maintains records and swatches of all bulk approvals for each quality and colour.
Maintaining records of product specifications, stock volumes and production status.
Negotiation of the initial terms of supply of goods or services.
Negotiation of raw material and trim costs, to ensure the best market value and quality in compliance with company budgets and planning for future productions.
Ensure consistent costs for core items.
Negotiate payment terms on all purchasing.
Assisting in customer relations with SA stockists and online customers
Managing Aftersales offering with regards to refurbishment and repairs
Managing the fulfillment of online orders off the SA online store.
Researching and building new relationships with sustainable suppliers, helping us achieve our sustainability goals.
Education and Experience:
Background in one or more of these fields would be helpful:
Visual Communications & Marketing, Product Design, CMF design, Fashion Design.
Previous work experience within the product design/ fashion space and preferably in the luxury sector. Understanding of what “quality” production physically looks like and how this relates to details.
Proven experience in prototyping or assembling Leather goods is an advantage.
Good knowledge of manufacturing techniques and process, related to quality standards procedures of Leather goods.
Good metal accessories knowledge.
You are curious, professional and takes initiative. You have exceptionally strong organizational skills and excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills. You understand what makes a luxury product a cut above. Passionate about Leather goods development and production
BS/BA/BFA degree Product Design or Fashion Design
Strong collaborative, organisational and interpersonal skills
Project management skills
Able to establish high standards in the procurement process
Proficiency in 3D rendering, Photoshop, Illustrator, inDesign, Keynote/Powerpoint and Excel.
